Best SUV Gas mileage cars...

1. Nissan Kicks

...31 city / 36 highway / 33 combined MPG

A superlative 31-mpg city rating and 33-mpg combined rating make the 2020 Nissan Kicks the most efficient gas-only crossover on the market. Surprisingly, driving the 122hp, CVT-only, front-drive–only Kicks is pretty entertaining, thanks to a low overall weight and good suspension tuning. Three trim levels are available, with prices between $18,870 on the low end and $24,015 fully equipped.

The 2020 Nissan Kicks sits in the top third of our subcompact SUV rankings thanks, in part, to an ample list of standard features and one of the largest cargo capacities in the class. Its slow acceleration is one of its few negatives.

  • Good fuel economy
  • Low starting price
  • Abundant cargo space for class
  • Plenty of standard features

2. Lexus UX 200

...29 city / 37 highway / 33 combined MPG $33,950

A 2.0-liter inline-four with 169 hp gives the 2020 Lexus UX 200 middling performance but exceptional fuel economy. Its 37-mpg highway rating is tops among gas-only SUVs, thanks in part to a CVT that can simulate 10 distinct gear ratios if desired. Front-wheel drive is the only configuration available on the UX 200 – the UX 250h hybrid offers all-wheel drive standard.

The UX 200 achieves an EPA-rated 29 miles per gallon city, 37 mpg highway and 33 combined. The BMW X1 falls short of this mark at 23 city, 32 highway and 26 combined. The same goes for the Audi Q3, which earns 19 mpg city, 27 highway, and 22 combined. Those in search of even greater fuel efficiency ought to check out the UX 250h gasoline-electric hybrid, which earns figures of 43 city, 41 highway, and 42 combined

3. Mercedes-Benz GLA250

...The GLA250 comes with a 208-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a decent feature list that includes power-adjustable front seats, a power liftgate, Bluetooth and a 7-inch central display. The GLA250 4Matic version adds all-wheel drive and hill descent control.

List price range $19,850 - $22,408

  • Returns respectable mileage considering its performance
  • High clearance and optional all-wheel drive lend some all-weather capability
  • One of the most entertaining crossovers in the class

The base-level GLA250 comes with a generous features list, but we'd still want to add the Premium package for its satellite radio, keyless entry, heated seats and blind-spot monitoring, and the Multimedia package for its voice-controlled navigation and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration. For frequent highway commuting, we might also opt for the Driver Assistance package, which bundles adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist.

4. BMW X5 MPG

...The new 2020 X5 engines are more efficient than past years, but the SUV's fuel economy is only middling and there's no plug available (yet). Federal testers rate the X5 xDrive40i at 20 mpg city, 26 highway, 22 combined. That's a 4 on our scale. Rear-wheel-drive X5s manage slightly better fuel economy: 21/26/23 mpg

LIKES

  • Beautiful interior
  • Spacious cabin
  • Standard 10.3-inch touchscreen
  • Great base engine

The 2020 BMW X5 is a big SUV on a big budget that does nearly everything great.

5. Audi Q7 MPG

...The Q7's fuel economy is decent, considering its size. ... The Q7's EPA estimates are quite similar to the Volvo XC90 T6's, and the Audi's smaller 2.0-liter engine doesn't improve upon the V-6's fuel economy; both engines are rated at 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.

$54,545

  • HIGHS Back-road athleticism, beautiful and high-tech cabin, three-row versatility.

The Q7 is at its best with the supercharged V-6 and the adaptive air suspension, and we'd recommend the Prestige trim with the Adaptive Chassis package. It comes with a hefty asking price, but you get what you pay for, and in this case, you're getting one of the best mid-size luxury crossovers on sale today as well as our three-time award winner.

6. DR3 S1 1.5 Bi-Fuel GPL

7. Ford EcoSport

...27 city / 29 highway / 28 combined MPG

Despite being nimble and offering a stellar infotainment system, the 2020 Ford EcoSport ranks near the bottom of the subcompact SUV class because it can't keep up with either the punchy powertrains or the greater comfort of its rivals.

  • Straightforward optional infotainment system
  • Good maneuverability in close quarters

about $20,000 to $27,300

The EcoSport's basic technology includes a 4.2-inch display, two USB ports, and a Wi-Fi hot spot, the last of which is newly standard for 2020. If you can afford it, upgrade to a model that has the SYNC 3 infotainment system. It has an 8-inch touch screen, and it features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, which project your favorite apps onto the screen. The buttons and knobs are mostly easy to use, though a few are tucked away and tricky to reach.

The EcoSport has 20.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats. These fold flat with a 60/40 split, providing 50 cubic feet of space. That's more than most subcompact SUVs. The rear gate is a bit unusual, as it swings to the side instead of lifting up. We recommend a trial run to make sure you like this style.

8. Toyota RAV4

...28 city / 35 highway / 30 combined MPG

The 2020 Toyota RAV4 is the most efficient gas-only all-wheel-drive crossover available, achieving 27 city/34 highway/30 combined mpg in the EPA’s testing. Those numbers improve even more to 28/35/30 in its most efficient form. Whether all-wheel-drive or not, all conventionally powered RAVs get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and eight-speed automatic transmission. A hybrid is available, and a plug-in hybrid RAV4 Prime is coming later this year. That model will boast excellent fuel economy and strong performance, thanks to 302 combined horsepower and standard all-wheel drive

Each trim level of the 2020 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid has the same fuel efficiency. This vehicle can reach 41 miles per gallon in the city and 38 miles per gallon on the highway, with a combined gas mileage of 40 mpg.

9. Peugeot 5008 MPG & CO2

...Price £28,480 - £40,835

Despite its size and seat count, the Peugeot 5008 should be cheap to run

Modern manufacturing techniques mean blending lightness with strength is now easier than ever, so despite being a big car, the Peugeot 5008 is pretty lithe and frugal. There are no “how did they manage that?” figures, but it’s up there with the best in terms of fuel economy.

If you want a petrol 5008, the 1.2-litre PureTech 130 is a better choice than the 1.6-litre where fuel economy is concerned. Figures of up to 46mpg and 129g/km of CO2 should be easier on the wallet than 39.6mpg and 132g/km, particularly as the latter increases the car's Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) company-car tax band.

The 1.5-litre BlueHDi diesel can manage up to 57.3mpg, and the optional eight-speed automatic is the most efficient in the 5008 range, capable of fuel economy of up to 58.6mpg and CO2 emissions of 103g/km. The manual 1.5-litre diesel’s CO2 emissions are 107 g/km.

The smaller 128bhp 1.5-litre diesel officially returns up to 56.3mpg and emits 104g/km of CO2. The other diesel (a 2.0-litre) is only available with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and isn't available on the lower trim levels.

Going for the 2.0-litre diesel gets you more power, although running costs remain reasonable. The top-of-the-range 175bhp engine officially returns 47.1mpg and emits 124g/km of CO2. Whichever diesel you choose, then, fuel consumption will be more than palatable.

10. 2020 Ford Edge MPG & Gas Mileage Data

$31,100

...The 2020 Ford Edge is reasonably efficient at 21 to 24 mpg combined. ... The base, front-wheel-drive Edge manages 21 mpg city, 29 highway, 24 combined from its turbo-4 and 8-speed automatic. Adding all-wheel drive drops those numbers slightly to 21/28/23 mpg.

LIKES

  • Sharp handling
  • Good material quality
  • Powerful engines
  • ST model is actually fun

With Ford’s suite of safety tech standard, spend less on tech options and more on performance like all-wheel drive.

Compared to other crossovers, the Edge cuts a crisper profile in performance. Base versions tap a potent 250-horsepower turbo-4; the 335-hp twin-turbo ST can sprint to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds. Handling is sharp and responsive too, but big 21-inch wheels on some models can transmit too many shimmies and shakes into the cabin for our liking. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is an option on all trims save the ST, where it’s standard.

An egg-like shape makes the Edge more difficult to turn into a sporty-looking crossover, but sharp headlights, a big grille, and thin pillars help. In ST trim, with big black wheels and little red badges, the Edge looks downright mean, as a 335-hp crossover should. Titanium models dial up the chrome for a premium look, one that wouldn’t seem out of place at even the fanciest valets.
